How to hatch them
Incubate at 37.5°C · ~21 days · rest 24h before setting

Rest the eggs pointy-end down for 24 hours after they arrive — let them settle after the journey before you set them.

Incubate at 37.5°C (99.5°F), 45–50% humidity for the first 18 days, turning at least 3 times a day.

Lockdown on day 18 — stop turning, lift humidity to 65–70% and keep the lid shut. Hatch is around day 21.

Shipped eggs are always a gamble — postage and your setup affect the result, so treat a good hatch as a win, not a guarantee. Give them a steady start and this tough, vigorous bird does the rest.

About the flock

Where they come from

Ottofowl is a composite landrace bred by Otto Wolki on the family farm at Woomargama, NSW. Egyptian Fayoumi sits at the core — an ancient forager that feeds itself and reads the sky for hawks — with Barred Rock, Araucana, Naked Neck and Sicilian Buttercup folded in for frame, egg colour, heat tolerance and hardiness.

They free-range all day and roost up in the trees at night. Bred for how a bird performs on a real farm — not how it places at a show.

Good to know

Hatching questions, answered.

Are these eggs fertile? +

Yes — they come straight from our free-ranging flock, which runs with active roosters, so fertility is high when they leave us. Postage and your incubator setup then affect the final hatch, so rest them 24 hours before setting and give them a steady run.

How are they packed and shipped? +

Every egg is individually wrapped and cushioned in a sturdy box built to survive the trip, then posted Australia-wide with free shipping via Australia Post. We dispatch early in the week so your eggs aren't sitting in transit over a weekend.

What hatch rate should I expect? +

Shipped hatching eggs are always a bit of a gamble — even a 50% hatch from posted eggs is a good result. Handle them gently, rest them before setting, and run a steady incubator. We can't promise a specific number, but we pack them to give you the best possible shot.

What colour eggs will I get? +

A mix — the Araucana genetics bring blue and green, alongside tinted and brown from the rest of the flock. Every dozen is a surprise.

What will the chicks be like? +

Tough, alert, self-reliant birds in a mix of colours and types. They forage hard, roost high and read the sky for predators — clever survivors bred for a real farm, not lap chickens.

Can I get live birds instead? +

Live birds — chicks, pullets, cockerels, hens and roosters — are farm pickup at Woomargama in seasonal batches. Fertile eggs are the only thing we post. See the Ottofowl page and get on the list so you don't miss a drop.
